Hammer of the Gods The Desolate Empire Volume 3 Christina Ochs Books

I just LOVE this series! The writing is entertaining and easy to follow. The plot has lots of twists and turns and the villians are WICKED! I have been very sad when the characters die, but I get it - it has to happen in stories of war. Can't wait for the next book - I am HOOKED!

Hammer of the Gods The Desolate Empire Volume 3 Christina Ochs Books Reviews

Disclaimer I was given a free electronic copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Hammer of the Gods by Christina Ochs is the third novel in the Desolate Empire series. You can read my reviews of the first two books, Rise of the Storm and Valley of the Shadow on my review page. For the sake of avoiding spoilers, I’ll be focusing on the quality of Hammer of the Gods itself and my personal reactions to it.

I’ve said it once with these books, and I’ll say it again now the Desolate Empire series is all-ages Game of Thrones. Ochs has crafted a vivid and complex world, with a large cast of engaging characters who are constantly locked in political maneuvers, fierce battles and other life-and-death struggles.

And Hammer of the Gods is the most intense yet. The story picks up right where Valley of the Shadows left off, and the reader is thrown straight into the action. The only thing I struggled with in the beginning was remembering some of the supporting characters and the world’s geography. If you’re in the same boat don’t worry. Ochs provides maps at the beginning of the text and a glossary of persons and locations in the back to help you out.

As with the other two novels in this series, Hammer of the Gods rotates from multiple perspectives, with short chapters that allow you to breeze through the book despite its length. Ochs manages to cover years’ worth of action without making you feel like you’re missing anything. While sometimes this does result in more “summary” than I personally like, the fast pace and the detail of the main scenes make up for it.

Whether from Och’s writing talent, the intensity of the plot, or my now three-book relationship with the characters, I found myself having uncharacteristically strong emotional reactions to Hammer of the Gods. At different stages during my reading, I found myself fist-pumping, biting my knuckles, grinning from ear-to-ear, and holding back tears -- all while on the train, of course.

If you’re a fan of “soft” cliffhangers, you’ll adore the ending. Like the other two novels, the main battles of Hammer of the Gods come to a close, but the individual characters leave us with some burning questions as to their fates and/or next moves. I found each character’s journey and growth profoundly satisfying, and I’m pleased with where each one is left at the end of the novel. There were a few twists that I did not expect throughout the story, and I’m very excited to see how they affect the next novel.

Fans of epic fantasy, historical fantasy, and/or military fiction need to read this series. Between bloody battles, political collusion, romances, religious zealotry, and even a dash of magic, Hammer of the Gods has something for everyone. Do yourself a favor and buy the entire Desolate Empire series NOW. And hell, at the time of this writing, Rise of the Storm (The Desolate Empire Book 1) is FREE on -- there’s literally nothing stopping you from making your reading life 100x better today.
I've loved every book in the DESOLATE EMPIRE series so far. This one had me on the edge of my seat nearly the entire time. I would say this is my favourite of the series so far, but that would mean having to choose between three stellar books! The characters I'd missed were back and better than ever, their lives altered by the events of VALLEY OF THE SHADOW. Everyone is pulled in an unpredictable direction, with new characters entering under unique circumstances, and old characters crossing unforeseen paths. For the life of me, I couldn't predict anything. I fell totally into the story, drinking up every word and aching to know what happened next. I loved everyone's story– beloved characters like Braeden, Anton, and Lennart made triumphant returns– but I was much more raptured with Gwennyth this time around. I won't say anything, but trust me when I say that you will not see the twist in her story coming. I can't remember the last time my heart pounded so hard from a book. The pacing and events chaining together are fantastic. You truly feel like you're on a journey with these characters. I'm completely invested in this series and will recommend it to all fantasy lovers I know. It was awesome! (Full, detailed review coming June 4 on literarybraun.blogspot.ca)
Oh man, what a journey. Arryk takes the bench this time around to sort out his new kingly duties and challenges back home. In the meantime, Lennart steps up to become a major player on Kendryk's side of this on-going battle. Now it's up to him and other characters to raise up a formidable army to finally put Teodora's power to rest.

Interestingly enough, we begin to follow Teodora's daughter, Elecktra and her part in this story. As Teodora's heir, she respects but loathes her mother and we watch her grow up in her decision-making as well as her attempts to strike out on her own to prove that she can one day fill Teodora's shoes.

Gwynneth also faces her own trials by trying to keep her family safe while her husband tries again to fight his war. Now that she relies on friends in other places we see her "stuck" for the first time; she risks her safety multiple times for the chance to help her family break from their somewhat limbo state.

You also follow Braeden and Anton as they are still in the thick of the fighting itself—depending on which side they are forced to fight on. You really get to see the story unfold from the highest to the lowest perspectives on the playing field. The big question throughout the novel is who's gonna stay alive and which side will finally win.

What I Enjoyed

I really liked Elektra. Like, at some points you wanted Braeden to finally end her and other times you wanted her to show Teodora that there's a better way to fight this war. I enjoy plots and characters where your loyalties shift because of their choices. Throughout this whole series you end up liking people on both sides of the war and you worry that someone will have to die as a result of the other side winning. It goes to show what kind of mess a war can be, and at this point, everyone's trying to get the war done before everyone loses their money.

For all you Anton fans out there, we finally get to see him fall in love—for reals this time! It's fun yet heartbreaking to watch, considering the world they live in. I'm always intrigued by how Ochs reminds us of how people try to sustain their love and livelihoods in the middle of a long war. The show must go on, right? The war becomes so much more than just a bunch of royalty wanting to keep their territories in order, as well as their faith of choice.

Speaking of faith, it still plays a heavy role in this novel. Characters are forced to convert as leverage and we still see the cost of a battle over how to interpret scriptures, or Scrolls in this case. But multiple characters who hold onto the old faith begin to see that their heretic counterparts can still be respected and respected. Characters start looking beyond religious labels to make their judgement of other characters. It makes you hope that key players in this fight will come to the same conclusion *hint hint, Teodora* but the Empress doesn't seem keen on letting anyone say anything akin to "I told you so." I think it's one idea that modern readers can take away—considering the majorly thick political battles we see on social media about "who's right and who's wrong."

The Final Say

Never have I seen a series with such consistency. Each book is of the same caliber and weight as all the others; meaning she hasn't put all of her chips into her first book. I'm not saying the books are in any way predictable, but her pacing and character treatment is consistently working for her.

Funnily enough, when I was getting to about 80% of the novel, I was wondering how Ochs would wrap up such a complicated and riveting war. It wasn't until I reached the end that she mentions that book 4, Winter of the Wolf will be released later this year. Turns out, I was reading it and thinking this was the conclusion of the series. But it isn't! Phew! For a second, I was worried about all the characters that had yet to complete their motives. In reality, I just have to wait like everyone else to get the next part of the story!

As you can tell by my rating and review, I would definitely recommend this novel. Just do yourself a favor and read her first two books, obviously!
Very well done . Can't wait for the others .
I have loved every book in this series. The author keeps you entertained and wanting more. Always keeps you on your toes.
