Deep in the Lurr Forest, there is a valley called Saint Elm's Deep. This secret valley remains in a perpetual state of spring and hosts the thousands of fae who live there. The Heart Tree's magic sustains the boundaries that protect them all and their lush forest, but the Hoar Witch has poisoned its roots.

Queen Corydalis needs a certain shard to cast a beckoning so that the Emerald-eyed Champion of lore might come and save them all, for he is the only one who can end the Hoar Witch. If they hope to save the Heart Tree, that deed must be done.

Join Thorn, Bristle and Barb, the Pixie Queen's fiercest, smartest and most loyal elves as they take a thrilling journey out of their protected world into true Overland, where danger hides around every corner and everything they have ever loved is at stake.

A note from the author about the timeline of this story

This tale starts at about the same time The Legend of Vanx Malic Book Two - Dragon Isle, does. It can be read at any time during the series, but will serve readers best if they read it before they read book four, That Frigid Fargin Witch, which is due for release Jan. 9th 2014.

This story is not part of the main Vanx Malic tale, but the character Foxwise Posy-Thorn is destined to become relevant, if he can survive this ordeal.
Thank you and enjoy, M. R. Mathias

Ok, this line alone makes this worth reading:

"One of the little buggers shoved it's head in his mouth and he felt them pushing into every opening his armor would allow them...."

I actually jumped in my seat like WTH?? Like oh crap, that was intense! I could only imagine going through that.
So, let me go back and introduce you to General Foxwise Penny-Thorn. He's the leader of Queen Corydalis's honor guard and General of defenses in the Lurr Forest fae. Thorn along with, Bristle, and Barb have been charged with the retrieval of the Falriggin's Shard. "You need not know why, other than this: the Heart Tree and the future of the Lurr Forest fae is at stake..."

What I like is that the development of the characters moves at the pace of the action, Barb is to me like Natasha Romanov, a.k.a. Black Widow of The Avengers. Tough, smart, beautiful, and deadly. Foxwise is great because he is not the typical Captain America, Jason Bourne type, rarely hurt, and without any fear. Fear keeps you on your toes. Not that he is a wimp by any means, just not stoic. Bristle the elf reminds me of Gimli the dwarf warrior from LOTR, a fun, loveable, onery character.

(Minor Spoiler)

I like that Author M.R. Mathias is not afraid to introduce the reality of loss in battles and quests. And though this story was short it never lacked movement. In contrast, I read Mathias's Sword & The Dragon preview, which I felt lacked the approach of "Foxwise"; being too wordy for my taste, although "Points of Purchase" has left my mouth at least a couple times a day since. :) I just expected it to move a bit faster. Mathias has a voice of his own and seems to have a never ending supply of stories. He has created a vivid world, that lives and breathes in a digital space. I am starting the next one...now.

Foxwise A Legend of Vanx Malic Short Story The Legend of Vanx Malic Book 0 eBook M R Mathias Reviews

This fantasy adventure short story has been good to read. However, I think it is hanging. I am looking forward for the next series though. I believe the author has a great potential to create such fantasy adventure books. I maybe read it again later to absorbs everything inside. I am looking for more adventure like the battle between that bad queen and the good characters.
"Foxwise" is the first (I believe) in 'The Legend of Vanx Malic' series by author M. R. Mathias. This e-book was approximately 28 printed pages and was free at the time of writing this review.

General theme (minor spoilers)

The realm of Lurr Forest is endangered. The Pixie Queen sends her three most trusted elves (Thorn, Bristle and Barb) on a quest to retrieve Falriggin's Shard, a relic with which she may be able to summon a distant 'champion' that has the power to save the land.

Some thoughts on "Foxwise"...

1.) a short fantasy adventure, both well written and edited.

2.a) even though this book is very short, there was some good character development in our heroes.
2.b) a near perfect blend of action vs drama.
2.c) the sense of pace and timing was spot on.

3.) many intriguing encounters in the air, water and castle tunnels... some of the creepy, skin crawling variety.

4.) important characters that can be severely injured or even killed. Adding a sense of realism to this fantasy story.

5.) dire circumstances that were blended with a sprinkling of wry humor. I thought this aspect was really well done, giving he story a more natural and realistic feel.

Impressions
A winning effort by author M. R. Mathias. A short tale that succeeds because the action portions do not completely overwhelm the areas of character building... something that is not always the case in some of M. R. Mathias' longer novels that I've read.

As it is... 5 Stars.

To start off I thought this book was going to be much longer. It was an interesting fairy tale. It had all the elements of a proper tale including action-adventure, love and fairies /elves. Be a good book for anyone who likes these sort of things. In the very end though it didn't make me want to continue to read in the series.
Anything to do with wizards and witches has always not been my genre but going through some reviews of Foxwise I was eager to read it and see if my perceptions were justified. The book proved me wrong and unlike me though for as long as I can remember reading this book was so enjoyable and captivating. The author has done a great job in scene and character development and though it is short, one can totally relate with the story. Reading the last page of this book only leaves you yearning for more. You really have to read
I purchased this short story for zero cost and read it before I began Volume 4 of the Vanx Malic series as requested. Therefore I was already familiar with what had happened up until then but none of these characters or their quest were familiar to me. Was this totally unrelated to the series or a small slice of a much larger pie?

If you haven't read anything of this series yet, this will give you a nice short story that leaves you wondering what part of a greater adventure this could possibly be from. It also had me wondering if any of these characters might be involved later in the overall Vanx Malic quest. This story is estimated at only about 28 pages yet it will give you a feel for the intensity, suspense and some of the horrible evils being faced in this environment.

This short tale just made me want to get started reading the next book in the series right away to see if any of this was indeed related to the main story. So as requested read this small tale before reading 'That Frigid Fargin Witch' (Malic Series Vol.4 ) and this mini-quest may become even more meaningful to you later. (Now remember I only said 'may'). And even if you do nothing else, you will still get to read this very short and exciting adventure tale for free. Now that isn't so very bad is it?
